IMS Bearing dual row update kit, LN Engineering - Porsche 911 type 996, 1999-2001, Boxster type 986 1997-2001
The best and only intermediate shaft bearing update solution that we install and recommend. Provides a complete Genuine LN Engineering IMS bearing update kit for use on the early M96 Porsche 911 and Boxster vehicles equipped with the dual-row factory bearing. You will need an installation tool kit, which is available here, in order to complete the install yourself. Please be aware that due to the sensitive nature of the install and potential catastrophic engine failure which can occur if not performed correctly, LN Engineering and Lüfteknic only recommend installation of this IMS Bearing update kit by experienced, qualified Porsche specialists.
An LN Engineering IMS Bearing update kit replaces the potentially troublesome sealed OEM Porsche bearing with an 'open' hybrid ceramic ball bearing. This design is both more robust than the factory item and because of its open design, will allow fresh engine oil to pass through and help maintain proper lubrication of the IMS bearing. All LN Engineering kits feature the highest quality components from Japan or the USA.
Don't be fooled by imitations or lower priced options, an LN Engineering kit is the original and best IMS bearing update kit.
Fits:
  • 911 C2 / C4 / Cabriolet type 996, 1999-2001*
  • Boxster / Boxster S type 986, 1997-2001*

*Important! 2000-2001 production models may have come equipped with either the earlier dual-row IMS bearing or the smaller middle range production single-row IMS bearing from the factory. Additionally with many of these vehicles having replacement engines there is NO WAY to verify which kit you will need until you have visually done so on your exact vehicle. We do not recommend ordering until you are absolutely sure of which bearing kit you will need. Please contact us directly for further information.

Any LN Engineering IMS bearing update kits which have been opened or tampered with in ANY way cannot be returned for any reason. This includes breaking the outer seal on the LN Engineering box.  There are no exceptions. This is for your and any future customer's piece of mind. Being such a critical engine part we do not want any chance of IMS bearing damage or contamination by any means or source. Any IMS bearing kits purchased from Lüfteknic are 100% guaranteed genuine, new LN Engineering products.
Of the various maladies which can effect the M96 /M97 engine families from Porsche, the intermediate shaft bearing failure is perhaps the most well known, and certainly the most common. While this is not a universal problem that effects all Porsche models delivered with one of these engines, the total destruction of the engine if and when it occurs is enough of a reason for most owners, especially those with minimal or incomplete service histories, to replace the IMS Bearing with one of these excellent and proven LN Engineering kits.
One of the most crucial aspects of maintenance on any Porsche, but especially the M96 / M97 engine, is quality and frequency of service of the engine oil and filter. We recommend 5,000 mile / 6 month intervals. While LN recommends specific oils and their oil filter kit, we prefer Liqui Moly oil and OE type Mahle filters. Our complete oil service kit provides you with everything you need. A customer who maintains their Porsche correctly, drives it regularly and in a sporting fashion tend to see fewer issues from the IMS. This includes cars which have been updated with an LN Engineering IMS kit.
The best way to view the IMS bearing on this engine is as an item to be replaced as a means of preventative maintenance, much like a timing belt service. LN Engineering recommends a 75,000 mile / 6 year service interval on vehicles utilizing their dual-row kit. Because of its smaller size and lighter load rating, they recommend a shorter 4-year / 50,000 mile service interval on their 'Classic' single-row upgrade kits.
