The power steering fluid requirements in German cars as a whole has been not clearly understood by many owners over the years. Mistakenly many steering racks and pumps have failed due to the wrong fluid (hydraulic oil) being used. Always look at your owners manual to check what fluid type your car requires.

Most early (pre-96) 944, 928, 951, 964 Porsches use ATF (Dexron) as the power steering fluid. The 993 and 996 use Pentosin CHF11S as the power steering fluid. The late model 911 Turbos (ie 993TT) also use it as hydraulic clutch fluid. The wrong fluid will destroy the seals in the system.

Synthetic hydraulic fluid that was developed to meet the highest requirements of numerous vehicle and aggregate manufacturers and is especially used in applications where handling and safety are directly influenced. Central hydraulic oil provides almost entirely friction-free operation of hydraulic systems including power steering, rear axle steering, level control, hydropneumatic suspension, shock absorbers, active damping and engine support, hydrostatic fan drive, alternator and A/C, stability and traction control systems (ABS/ASR/ASC), electrohydraulic convertible top mechanism, central locking, etc. Taking into account manufacturer specifications, central hydraulic oil is suited for a variety of applications and even can be used in farm tractors and in other special vehicles in addition to vehicles from reputable European car manufacturers. This oil also has exceptional high and low temperature properties, excellent wear protection and optimal shear stability.
